In the United States, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May. It was formerly know as Decoration Day. Originally started to honor Union Soldiers who died during the Civil War, it now includes all men and women who died in any war. In honor of these individuals, people visit cemeteries and fly the flag at half mast from dawn until noon. It is also considered the start of the summer season.
